Superstar music chart toppers left HUGE tip for hotel staff

ABBA landing at Hurn Airport 12th Sept 1981.

More than 40 years ago the Echo received a tip that a top musical group were coming to town, but this was nowhere near as impressive as the tip the singing quartet left for the hotel they stayed in.

Out of nowhere, like a bolt from the sky, four of the music industry's most renowned icons graced Bournemouth with their presence - Abba.

The band flew in from Stockholm on a private jet to Hurn Airport, en route to a party at the end of CBS Records’ conference at the Carlton Hotel in 1981.

On the following day, as they bid their farewell, the hotel manager was astounded by the generous tip left behind - a staggering £500, equivalent to approximately £2,000 in today's currency.

Upon receiving advanced notice of their arrival, The Daily Echo eagerly awaited the band's presence at the airport.

Agnetha Faltskog said it was unlikely the group would tour Britain, but said: “I love your country.”

Band members Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad had divorced that year, two years after Faltskog and Bjorn Ulvaeus did the same.

Andersson told the Echo: “We find that we are working better together now that there is no pressure of marriage.”

Instead of performing at the Carlton, the group decided to attend a lively gathering alongside approximately 300 delegates. Among the attendees were also the Nolans, who added to the celebratory atmosphere.

The next day, as they departed, they left an incredibly generous tip to mark their departure.

The hotel’s executive director, John Furlong, said: “I have been in the hotel business for a long time, and I have never known anyone to be so generous as this. They can come back any time.”

ABBA - Radio Times

Radio Times
"In 1974, Britain had the honour of hosting the event, not because we’d won the previous year (Cliff Richard came third), but because the actual winners, Luxembourg, were not prepared to host it. So it was that on 6 April, Abba took to the stage in Brighton to announce themselves to the world.
Not that the British jurors were impressed at the time. In fact, they gave the Swedes nul points – unlike the millions watching all over Europe, in particular the other Eurovision juries, who quickly installed Abba and their song Waterloo as the winners.
You're watching:
Why You Should Watch: The Gallows Pole
In the latest issue of Radio Times magazine – out now – we remember that night and hear from those who were there, from Benny Andersson of Abba to Mike Batt of the Wombles, who had donned his furry suit to provide the half-time entertainment.
All this nostalgia is good clean fun, but of course Abba, who have long resisted demands to reform, remain part of our pop-cultural world. Their songs top playlists, inspire musicals and Hollywood movies and indeed their avatars still sell out shows half a century later. We explore all this and more in our feature."

Waterloo 50th, the day!!!!

waterloo50th
06/04/2024
It’s slightly dizzying and deeply humbling to think that millions of you who saw us for the first time in the Eurovision final 1974 have passed our music on not only to one generation, but to several. We see evidence of that every time one of us visits ABBA Voyage in London and it’s because of this we can celebrate the 50th Anniversary of that event in the knowledge that our songs still resonate around the world.
It’s difficult to comprehend that 50 years have gone by since the four of us waited backstage for the verdicts of all the juries around Europe at the Dome in Brighton. So what were our dreams during those suspenseful moments or in the chaos in the aftermath of the victory we had secured with the smallest margin in Eurovision history? Four different dreams, no doubt, but whatever they were, however grand, reality has surpassed them, that’s for sure.
Many of you were there from the very start and have followed us ever since - for over half a century! Music you discover and learn to love when you grow up or even later in life has a way of staying with you forever. We share that experience with you and to know that our music has become a constant in your lives is a wonderful thing.
Throughout the years we have been blessed with the outpouring of love from you, our fans. We feel it and we want you to know that hardly a day goes by when we’re not reminded of it. To say thank you for what you’re giving us without sounding trivial is not easy and this is not a moment for triviality. It is a happy and at the same time solemn moment and we can only hope that you understand how deeply grateful we are for a long, successful career and for your steadfast loyalty and support through the years. Thank you!

50 years since ABBA won with «Waterloo»

50 years since ABBA won with «Waterloo»

– No quiero.

ABBA show reveals famous Glasgow line was dreamt up at the Apollo

ABBA show reveals famous Glasgow line was dreamt up at the Apollo

Ann Fotheringham

A NEW documentary about ABBA reveals the famous line about Glasgow in the song Super Trouper was actually dreamt up on stage in the Apollo.

The legendary city music venue was also the only stop on the worldwide tour where the group had to have an intermission – so the bar could open….

In When ABBA Came to Britain, which marks 50 years of the Swedish supergroup’s links with the UK, singer-songwriter Björn Ulvaeus reveals the line “I was sick and tired of everything, when I called you last night from Glasgow” just “came naturally” to him at the Apollo.

He adds: “The song is about waiting for my new girlfriend, and I was thinking about that while up on stage.”

Super Trouper was the title of track of the band's next album, released in November 1980.

Thomas Johansson, who produced all of the ABBA tours in Britain, says he remembers the Apollo date in particular.

“We had to have an intermission in Glasgow so they could have the bar open,” he recalls with a smile. “It was the only place we had an intermission.”

Broadcaster and author Stuart Marconie says the Glasgow gig, which was the last time ABBA played in Britain, was the “end of an era”.

He adds: “[The city] became immortalised when Björn wrote that line, ‘I was sick and tired of everything, when I called you last night from Glasgow’, and then ‘wishing every show was the last show’ – in terms of the UK, it was the last show.”

The 1979 tour, which also visited North America, Europe and Asia, was the first time ABBA had been on the road for almost three years.

They were still the “biggest-selling group in the history of recorded music”, according to their label, however, and Glasgow went wild for the satin-clad foursome - Björn, Agnetha Fältskog, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid, or Frida, Lyngstad.

The Apollo concert, on November 13, 1979, included a performance by children from Hillhead High School. As it was the International Year of the Child, the group had choirs of young people sing with them on I Have A Dream at each concert.

A total of 25 Hillhead pupils rehearsed for four weeks, at lunchtimes and after school, in preparation for the show.

According to our newspaper’s then pop writer, later features editor Russell Kyle, the concert, in front of 3500 fans, got off to a slow start because of problems with the acoustics, but once the problems had been ironed out, the band really hit their stride.

Backed by a nine-piece band, they ran through all of their hits and introduced a sprinkling of newer songs.

He added that the biggest cheer of the night was reserved for Frida, who appeared in a Scotland football top.

“It was three years since Abba’s last show,” he wrote, “but the group seem to have lost none of their appeal.”

Ever since they were introduced on stage at the Brighton Dome, resplendent in unforgettable platform heels and satin, ABBA have held an enduring place in Britain’s hearts and in British pop culture.

The new documentary features previously untransmitted interviews with ABBA, and takes an affectionate look at the band and its fascination with British music, including The Beatles in the 1960s.

After winning the Eurovision Song Contest with Waterloo in 1974, the band would eventually find global stardom, but their relationship with the UK remains unique.

When Abba Came to Britain will be broadcast on April 6 as part of a dedicated Saturday night of ABBA specials on BBC Two.
