The group recently reunited in Sweden to receive the Royal Vasa Order from King Carl XVI Gustaf of the Swedish royal family for their contribution to music.

And while the group were thrilled to receive the nod from their king, the band members had a sobering moment of realisation that there are far less days ahead of them than there are behind.

Opening up on the Rosebud podcast, Björn recalled to show host Gyles Brandreth, "We stood there quietly, accepting it out of the king's hand and him saying a few words. It was a very quiet and very elegant ceremony.

"All four of us of course were there. In public we see each other very rarely, and Frida said to me afterwards, 'This might be the last occasion'."

He added, "Very sad, and I thought about that afterwards, but we're not getting any younger."

Björn Ulvaeus is pop music royalty, a founder member of one the most successful pop groups in history - ABBA. So when Gyles was given the opportunity to interview him at a special event in Bridlington, the Rosebud team hotfooted it up there to record it. What you're going to hear is a very special, wide-ranging and fascinating conversation about Björn's life and his incredible career. Björn grew up in Västervik, a small coastal town on Sweden's east coast. It was a happy childhood, but he knew his future lay beyond the little town, and it turned out that his guitar was his escape route. In this interview, Björn tells Gyles about meeting Benny, how they clicked immediately and started to write songs together. He tells Gyles about their songwriting process, which is riveting. He talks about the night ABBA won Eurovision, and the difficult period that followed. He talks about the band's split, and about the effect of fame on his family. Gyles and Björn also - exclusively - reveal that they've been writing a song together. Will it ever see the light of day? You'll have to listen to find out...

¡Con casi cinco meses hasta el estreno de Mamma Mia! Hoy se anunció en la fiesta Schiecentrale de Rotterdam que se han vendido 50.000 entradas para este espectáculo único. Para celebrarlo, los fans de ABBA desde el principio, Jan Smit y Kees Tol, entregaron el billete dorado a su ídolo Björn Ulvaeus.

Kees Tol y Jan Smit viajaron recientemente a Estocolmo donde le entregaron a Björn Ulvaeus un billete dorado por la venta de más de 50.000 entradas para Mamma Mia! The Party, el espectáculo creado por el cantante/compositor de ABBA. Para Kees Tol y Jan Smit, este fue su primer encuentro con su ídolo. Hace tres años, Kees hizo el documental Take A Chance On Me sobre el grupo y el objetivo era conocer a uno de ellos. Eso no funcionó en ese momento. Each year, artists from all around Europe appear at our press event and concert to promote their song before the contest in May. We provide an exclusive, high-end and unique environment for Eurovision acts to perform and socialise with one another — often for the first time!

We are the originators of the Eurovision Pre-Party concept.

Our first event was held in 2008, so… This means that we are having our 15th anniversary! 

Last year our show featured more than 25 acts from Eurovision 2023, including the winner Loreen, UK’s Mae Muller and lots of super-stellar legacy acts.

It’s slightly dizzying and deeply humbling to think that millions of you who saw us for the first time in the Eurovision final 1974 have passed our music on not only to one generation, but to several. We see evidence of that every time one of us visits ABBA Voyage in London and it’s because of this we can celebrate the 50th Anniversary of that event in the knowledge that our songs still resonate around the world.

It’s difficult to comprehend that 50 years have gone by since the four of us waited backstage for the verdicts of all the juries around Europe at the Dome in Brighton. So what were our dreams during those suspenseful moments or in the chaos in the aftermath of the victory we had secured with the smallest margin in Eurovision history? Four different dreams, no doubt, but whatever they were, however grand, reality has surpassed them, that’s for sure.

Many of you were there from the very start and have followed us ever since - for over half a century! Music you discover and learn to love when you grow up or even later in life has a way of staying with you forever. We share that experience with you and to know that our music has become a constant in your lives is a wonderful thing.

Throughout the years we have been blessed with the outpouring of love from you, our fans. We feel it and we want you to know that hardly a day goes by when we’re not reminded of it. To say thank you for what you’re giving us without sounding trivial is not easy and this is not a moment for triviality. It is a happy and at the same time solemn moment and we can only hope that you understand how deeply grateful we are for a long, successful career and for your steadfast loyalty and support through the years. Thank you!

After a hiatus of around 50 years, Sweden begins to award awards such as the Vasa Order and the Sword Order again.

The orders should go to people who have made very special efforts.

Those named today include all the members of ABBA

The ceremony will take place on May 31.

King Carl XVI Gustaf has given a special honour to the four stars of Sweden’s music scene, ABBA.

The pop legends have become members of the Order of Vasa, one of the most prestigious orders of chivalry in Sweden. It’s the first time that new members have been created for half a century.

Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Reuss all become members of the Order for outstanding contributions to Swedish and international music.

They are made Commanders First Class of the Order.

The appointments are made by the King of Sweden on the advice of the country’s government.

King Carl XVI Gustaf hasn’t appointed anyone to the country’s orders of chivalry since the very start of his reign. In 2022, the Swedish government decided that appointments would begin again to recognise those who have contributed to Sweden.

Now, months after the king’s Golden Jubilee, appointments are being made again. There are four orders in Sweden – the Order of the Seraphim, the Royal Order of the Sword and the Royal Order of the Polar Star as well as the Royal Order of Vasa.

ABBA have long links with Sweden’s royal family and famously performed Dancing Queen as the country celebrated the marriage of King Carl XVI Gustaf to Queen Silvia in 1976.

Carlos XIV Gustavo de Suecia condecorará a los cuatro integrantes del grupo musical ABBA con la Gran Orden Vasa. Así lo anuncia en su página web donde especifica su condecoración gracias a su enorme aportación a Suecia con su música durante 50 años. 

En este sentido, el mismo rey les impondrá la Gran Orden el próximo 31 de mayo. Cabe destacar, que la reina Silvia es fiel seguidora del grupo musical sueco y aprovechando su 80 cumpleaños el pasado mes de diciembre, se celebró un concierto en la escuela de música independiente Lilla Akademien. 

Los niños interpretaron "Dancing Queen", de ABBA, y después cantaron el "Cumpleaños feliz"a la reina Silvia antes de que ésta fuera a agradecerles todo su trabajo.

Gran Orden Vasa

La Orden de Vasa se instituyó el 26 de mayo de 1772 por Gustavo III de Suecia, día de su coronación. Tenía por objeto de recompensar los servicios civiles a los artistas. Se compone de tres clases: seis grandes cruces, ocho comendadores y cincuenta caballeros, sin contar los extranjeros.

Tiene Cruz de cuatro aspas simétricas esmaltadas con ocho puntas. Sobre la cruz se alza la corona real, mientras que entre las aspas podemos ver otras cuatro coronas más pequeñas. Al centro medallón con el emblema de la dinastía Vasa, rodeado por un anillo de esmalte rojo inscrito que tiene en caracteres dorados’ GUST . D. III INST. MDCCLXXII ‘(Gustaf III instituyó en 1772); el reverso idéntico al anverso.
