Björn Ulvaeus : “For a long time, I have urged Performing Right Organisations to use intelligent third-party technology

ABBA's Björn Ulvaeus among investors in Audoo's £5.2 million funding round
by Andre Paine

Music technology company Audoo has announced it has closed its Series A funding round.
London-based Audoo has raised £5.2 million in less than 10 weeks in an investment round backed by Edinv, ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus and existing investors including Tileyard London.
The funding will go towards ensuring that artists and songwriters receive revenue that is rightfully theirs by accurately recognising and reporting music played in public performance areas, such as shops, gyms and cafés.
Audoo has invented an audio meter, shaped as a small plug, which fits into a standard electrical socket. The meter securely monitors what music a venue is playing, recognises and logs it, meaning that artists and composers can accurately receive the royalties they are owed for the broadcasting of their work.
To maximise the audio meter rollout, Audoo is working with Performing Right Organisations around the world to make installation a condition of venues gaining a license to play music.
Beyond royalty reporting, the data captured can also be leveraged by record labels, publishers, catalogue owners, managers, booking agents and artists themselves to refine their strategy, book tours and better understand how music is consumed.
Audoo have won music and technology industry awards, including MIDEM Labs earlier this summer.
The company board includes familiar names such as former BMG UK boss Alexi Cory-Smith, former BMI VP Rick Riccobono, international rights expert Cliff Fluet and Adam Parness, former global head of publishing at Spotify.
Audoo CEO Ryan Edwards said: “It doesn’t matter who you are – from Sir Elton John to the local singer-songwriter – we will deliver accurate data to ensure artists are paid fairly. The mission is everything to us. If our technology is in place in all UK licenced premises, it will log around 80 million plays every 12 hours. We’ll know – with certainty and in detail – exactly what people are listening to. We will collect and report the biggest set of public performance music data ever created.”
Audoo is a solution I believe will change the music industry forever and that’s why I have put my money where my mouth is
Björn Ulvaeus
Björn Ulvaeus said: “For a long time, I have urged Performing Right Organisations to use intelligent third-party technology. Audoo is a solution I believe will change the music industry forever and that’s why I have put my money where my mouth is.”
Chris Herbert, Audoo non-executive director and music manager, remarked: “Having worked closely with Ryan and the team for the past year, I couldn’t be prouder of our achievements, and how quickly we have raised these funds in such a challenging environment from industry leading & experienced investors. It is further validation of the need for such technology on a global scale.”
Cliff Fluet, Audoo board advisor and chair of the Ivors Academy Trust, said: “As a rights lawyer passionate about using technology to generate, find and distribute greater revenues, I have observed the importance of better data leading to more equitable distributions. This is a challenge experienced by all those in the music value chain and mission-critical for creators, from some of the largest artists on the planet to the emerging talent we are supporting in the early stage of their careers at the Ivors Academy Trust. Fair distributions of these revenues are even more important given the decimation of live music during the pandemic, which is a core focus of the DCMS inquiry into new music revenues.”

Kylie Minouge talks about ABBA

# News
SKAVLAN
Everybody loves Abba.
This week, "Skavlan" is visited by world stars Kylie Minouge and Dave Grohl, who pay tribute to the band.
- They were so big. I did concerts, where I pretended to be Agnetha, Minouge tells Fredrik Skavlan.
Australian singer Kylie Minouge, 52, has been a fan of Abba since she was eight years old. Throughout her career, she has performed several covers of well-known Abba songs, such as "When all is said and done" and "Dancing Queen". She also played with Benny Andersson during a tribute night in London eleven years ago.
So when you visit "Skavlan", take the opportunity to pay tribute to the Swedish band once again.
- I have Abba socks, it says in the program and continues:
- I was ten years old in 1978. Australia was Abbas's first big international success, they were so big. I did performances, where I pretended to be Agneta, the blonde of course., where I pretended to be Agneta, the blonde of course.
Nirvana drummer: "We love Abba"
On "Skavlan" she is supported by musician Dave Grohl, who played drums in Nirvana and later formed the band Foo Fighters.
- I remember when Nirvana described what kind of band we were, we wrote: "A cross between the punk rock band Black Flag and Abba," says Grohl.
- Abba has always been a big part of everyone's life. We love Abba, he says.
As Minouge says in the interview, Abba had a great success in Australia in the 70s and 80s. In the late 70s, Lasse Hallström directed "ABBA - The Movie 1977" as a semi-documentary in which the viewer knew the group's tour for Australia.
- Australia also believes that we belong to them. It's a "jäkla" pretty thing. We are part of the cultural heritage of others. It is very, very strange that you, as a foreigner, can become that, Björn Ulvaeus previously said.
Skavlan airs on Fridays at 9:00 p.m. on SVT1

Kylie Minogues hyllning till Abba
ABBAPublicerad 20 nov 2020 kl 09.00

Genom karriären har hon gjort flera covers på välkända Abba-låtar, som ”When all is said and done” och ”Dancing Queen”.

Anni-Frid Lyngstad - Tango I Det Grona - 1980

Förr kallade du mej din egen tjej, fru Pettersson
Men i dag vill du knappast ta ut mej

Note: Festfolk

From: abba-theconcerts.de

1970/71 – Festfolk
In late 1970 and in the spring of 1971 Agnetha, Frida, Benny and Björn toured with a cabaret show, Festfolk, accompanied by the dance band The Lolas. This show was about 45 minutes. ‘Festfolk’ means ‘party people’. There also was a joke about this name because when written as ‘Fästfolk’ it means ’engaged couples’. Rehearsals for this show began in September 1970 at the hotel (?) Sankt Jörgen.
Before the start of the tour they appeared on the radio show Våra favoriter (taped September 29, broadcast October 3) where they performed Frida’s Barnen sover, Agnetha’s Som ett eko and Björn & Benny’s Hej gamle man! from their upcoming solo album. On October 21 or 22 the TV programme Five Minutes Saloon was taped (broadcast December 13) with them performing on the songs Red Roses For A Blue Lady (chorus only) and California Here I Come. And on October 29-30 this was followed by the TV show I stället för Tarzan (broadcast October 31) possibly performing Hej gamle man!.
They usually performed on or around the weekends. According to Frida the audience varied from 14 to about 400. Especially the Festfolk shows were pretty disappointing and are remembered by the ABBA members as a big desaster, with people ordering their meals and raising their glasses to each other during the show.
"This is the low end of the collaboration between the four of us. [...] Because we were not doing what we were supposed to do. We were singing other people’s songs in a kind of cabaret act. Benny and I were doing a number where we supposed to be two little boys. [...] It was embarrassing, but it was after that tour that we realized, our own songs that's we should do"
Björn in Sunday Night Show Special: Agnetha speaks, Channel 7, Australia, May 2013
"Luckily, the show was never recorded. This was when we learned exactly what we should not be doing".
Björn, Bright Lights, Dark Shadows 2014, p.150
