Björn Ulvaeus spoke about the final end of ABBA and the continuation of the band’s history through shows with avatars.

Die Hoffnung vieler Fans auf eine Reunion ABBA ist bereits gering, aber die Worte von Björn Ulvaeus lassen auch den letzten Optimisten verstummen. Die Band wird nie wieder ein Konzert geben, erklärt er in einem Interview. Wer die Megastars dennoch sehen will, hat in London noch viele Jahre Gelegenheit.

Björn Ulvaeus hat im Interview mit der "Welt am Sonntag" deutlich gemacht, dass es für ABBA kein Zurück auf die Bühne gibt. "Nein, wir werden kein Konzert mehr geben. Das haben wir immer gesagt, und dabei bleibt es", erklärt der schwedische Musiker, der mit Benny Andersson, Agnetha Fältskog und Anni-Frid Lyngstad einst Erfolge feierte. "Selbst wenn es nur eins wäre, es wäre eine riesige Sache. Wir wollen einfach nicht. Warum sollten wir? Es ist vorbei", fügt Ulvaeus an. "Unsere Avatare aber werden ewig singen, sie werden uns überleben."

Es sei schon seltsam, sich als Kunstgestalt auf der Bühne zu sehen, erzählt Ulvaeus. "Vor allem auch zu beobachten, wie die Leute sich verbinden. Ich sehe ihn als jungen Mann, also mich, mit Anfang 30 damals, und zugleich das Publikum, das re- und interagiert. Eine verrückte Reflexion." Die Show habe er bisher "vielleicht siebenmal gesehen".

Noch keinen Namen für den Avatar

Mit seinem Avatar sei er sehr zufrieden, sagt Ulvaeus weiter. "Es ist alles genau so, wie ich es erwartet hatte, eigentlich sogar noch besser. Ich weiß nicht, was sie gemacht haben, aber meine Haare fallen sogar besser, als es damals der Fall war." Er habe sich in all diesen Jahren fast täglich auf Fotos oder Videos gesehen. "Ich wurde ständig an diesen jungen Mann erinnert. Und auch ich bin kein Fremder für ihn. Ich sage er oder ihn, weil er schon wie jemand anderes für mich ist", erklärt der Musiker. Einen Namen habe er nicht für ihn, "noch nicht zumindest. Aber ich habe einen Weg gefunden, meine Geschichte zu erzählen, indem ich seine Geschichte erzähle - die dieses Typen aus den 70er-Jahren."

Die Gruppe hätte für die Show in London viereinhalb Jahre Zeit, "und wenn es ein Erfolg ist, werden sie hoffentlich wollen, dass wir dort bleiben", erzählt der ABBA-Star. Man könne nicht touren mit einer solchen Show, aber man könnte Arenen an anderen Orten bauen. "Wir denken über Singapur nach, Las Vegas und eine Stadt in Europa", verrät Ulvaeus. Berlin sei dabei keine Option. Man müsse sich für viele Jahre verpflichten und benötige ein sehr großes Publikum. "Das hieße einen enormen Touristenzulauf oder sehr, sehr viele Menschen, die in dieser Gegend leben. Das erfüllt Berlin nicht."

Den 12 mars är också dagen då Färöarna hälsar tjällen välkommen med körsång (fast där heter den tjaldur). Den sången kommer vi att sjunga, i en svensk översättning av Gunnar D Hansson.

Taubedagen kommer att bjuda på ett flertal uruppföranden. Och kända visor i nya och överraskande arrangemang.

BA: This is the control room, an old Neve console from the sixties so it's completely analogue

as opposed to now when everything is made digitally.

- What's the difference?

BA: This is better! It's just lustful, all the way through, yes.

- The writing itself is more troublesome?

BA: That takes much much much much longer, you have to sit there and work and hear yourself play rubbish. It can sound like music but it doesn't become that until I feel, is captured by something. It can be four bars of something then you can say, at that stage, when you've gotten that far, yes, there is something good here. Then the so called inspiration set in.

- I saw somewhere that you during fifty years had composed x number of hours of music.

BA: Twenty hours?

- Half an hour of music per year.

BA: Yes, and I'm working every day. What it's about really is to be present and wait for something to happen. It's like there is a cave with a dragon in it that you sit and wait to see it. The thing is that if you go away, then it comes out and then you were not there. So it's all about sit and wait.

We did record an album last year ABBA Voyage and there are a couple of songs where I actually felt, yes yes, that's right, here it is, I Still Have Faith in You.

- When you wrote that, you feel it when you're sitting there that this is something?

BA: This is good, yes, and that one is a little older actually than our recording. A part of it is from a film called The Circle that we produced Ludvig Andersson and I.

- When you've worked with others, what was that like?

BA: Thankfully I've worked with others. I don't sing that well, I can't play guitar, drums or bass. It's one thing if you've got talent to write an OK song but that song must then be taken care of. There must be lyrics and two great singers. Björn wrote the lyrics, I am no good at writing lyrics unless it's for your birthday then I can come up with something.

- You're welcome to write something for my birthday! Musically, how did you and Björn work?

BA: We sat next to each other, he tried to follow on what I did. I don't understand how it works really but the piano is stronger than a guitar you know so I play and he must guess what the next chord will be and that he did that quite well actually. I wonder how it happened. You have an image of how a song will appear when you start recording it, often also wrong. We made several versions of Fernando, The Winner Takes It All and so on until we though now it's good, finally. And then everybody are involved, the whole band, they can come with, what if i play the bass like this, this riff. One is very responsive.

- It's teamwork?

BA: Yes, absolutely.

- You have communicated with so many people through your music. How does it fell when one hundred million people feel like they know you?

BA: It feels good in one way but they don't know me, they know the music and it's not only me. When you talk about one hundred million it's ABBA we're talking about. Then they know everybody in ABBA and like that. You can't quantify like that. You work, you come here, you write a song, lyrics, there are songs. Should we record them? We do the best we can. Then it's finished and the next time it's the same thing, the same procedure. So it's solid work but lustful.

- But I have thought about this, I've listened to the Goldberg Variations a couple of thousand times and the same thing about Tumbling Dice with The Rolling Stones. They never get old, they are always fresh! What makes a few compositions so timeless?

BA: I don't know but I believe it has to do with the sender and the receiver. The more honest you are with your intent, which you have to be when you work, like I do, with music that this is me, this is how I feel. If I don't feel it then you will not feel it either.

- You grow up with the image that making music is for the few that have it in them but it's really more about hard work than divine elements but they come as well.

BA: Yes, and they come because you work but I know if I don't give up, sooner or later something will turn up and then you can have that flow for surely two days maybe three. Isn't that a bit strange? You get this flow and where does it come from, I don't really know. I am not religious but now he's been sitting there for a month I'll send down a little something. Why does it happen when it happens? Why doesn't it come directly? I know what I'm looking for, why did it take three weeks to get there?

Puede que hayan pasado casi 40 años desde su último single, pero Abba vuelve a las listas de éxitos con dos nuevas canciones: I Still Have Faith in You y Don’t Shut Me Down. Estas canciones forman parte de un álbum de diez temas que saldrá a la venta en noviembre.

La banda se tomó lo que llamaron un “breve descanso” a finales de 1982. Pero, a pesar del tiempo que el grupo ha tardado en publicar nuevas canciones, Abba es más popular que nunca, en gran parte debido al éxito del recopilatorio Abba Gold (1992) y de las películas Mamma Mia! (2008, 2018). Las cifras hablan por sí solas: Abba ha vendido alrededor de 400 millones de discos en todo el mundo, y Abba Gold ha pasado más tiempo en la lista de los 100 mejores álbumes que ningún otro álbum. Entonces, ¿a qué se debe el poder de permanencia de Abba?

Actualmente estoy trabajando en una tesis que estudia el fenómeno fan (fandom) de Abba en el siglo XXI, concretamente sus miembros de larga duración. Voy más allá de las típicas descripciones de los medios de comunicación o incluso los académicos, que los presentan como una tribu monolítica o los patologizan como jóvenes obsesivos y locos. Me centro en la variada composición de los seguidores de Abba y los vínculos entre ellos, y exploraré que esto puede entenderse como una relación de afecto mutuo entre la banda y los fans.

De hecho, los seguidores más devotos de Abba les han ayudado a permanecer en la conciencia pública, a veces en circunstancias difíciles, y creo que el “regreso” de Abba no habría sido posible sin su apoyo.

Oldies, Goldies y Mouldies

Una de las complejidades del fandom de Abba nace de sus diferentes oleadas. Están los antiguos fans de los años setenta y principios de los ochenta –a menudo denominados Oldies en los círculos de fans– que conocieron y amaron a Abba durante su período activo original (1972-1982). Más recientemente, Abba Gold y la franquicia Mamma Mia! introdujeron a las generaciones más jóvenes –a veces denominadas Goldies y Mouldies– en la música del grupo.

Los Goldies y los Mouldies han encontrado sus propias formas de expresar su afición por Abba. La popularidad de Abba en las redes sociales es una prueba de ello: los vídeos de su página oficial en TikTok ya tienen casi 30 millones de visitas en apenas una semana.

Los Oldies han tenido un recorrido bastante diferente al de los seguidores más jóvenes. Los ochenta suelen denominarse los “días oscuros” del fandom de Abba. A medida que la década cambiaba, también lo hacían los gustos musicales populares, y Abba tuvo dificultades para triunfar como lo había hecho anteriormente.

Mientras la banda perdía el favor del público, muchos Oldies eran intimidados e incluso atacados. Ya no era socialmente aceptable ser fan de Abba. A pesar de estas presiones, los Oldies siguieron siendo fieles y esperaron pacientemente la llegada de nuevas canciones durante años.

Muchos de ellos apoyaron la nueva música de cada uno de los miembros de la banda, además de comprar las reediciones y álbumes recopilatorios de Abba. En 1986, cuando los clubes de fans de Abba empezaron a disolverse, dos seguidores holandeses crearon uno nuevo. Más tarde se convirtió en el Club de Fans Oficial Internacional de Abba, que todavía existe.

Este club publica cuatro revistas al año y celebra anualmente el Día de Abba (antes de las restricciones impuestas por la pandemia). Fans de todo el mundo se reúnen en esa fecha para compartir su afinidad y las últimas noticias del grupo. La jornada culmina en una sesión disco con música de Abba de cuatro horas.

Nuevas canciones

Es fácil suponer que los Oldies estarían encantados con el reciente anuncio de dos nuevas canciones de Abba. Pero la realidad es más compleja.

La mayoría de los fans se alegraron en las redes sociales, haciendo públicos su emoción y deleite. Sin embargo, a algunos Oldies el anuncio de Abba en 2018 de que había nueva música en camino les pareció que llegaba demasiado tarde.

Un fan con el que trabajé en mi proyecto escribió en aquel momento en Facebook:

“Nos han dicho tantas veces que esto NUNCA sucedería, y los fans han muerto esperando que suceda… Debería sentirme muy emocionado por esto pero no lo estoy”.

Esta decepción es comprensible si se piensa en el fandom como parte de una relación recíproca. Los antiguos seguidores siguieron apoyando a Abba emocional y económicamente durante varias décadas. No hay que subestimar esta inversión: un fan calcula que ha gastado más de 50 000 libras en compras relacionadas con Abba. Sin embargo, durante este periodo los Oldies no recibieron nueva música de Abba. Algunos sentían que le habían dado mucho al grupo a lo largo de los años pero que no habían recibido nada a cambio durante su parón.

Todos los fans de Abba, pero sobre todo los Oldies, llevan décadas alimentándose de aire. Finalmente, la lealtad y las esperanzas se han visto recompensadas: la promesa del grupo de “dos nuevas canciones” se convirtió en un álbum completo, al que seguirá un espectáculo virtual en Londres llamado “Abba Voyage” en la primavera de 2022.

La mayoría de las reacciones de los seguidores han sido positivas hasta ahora. La gente tiene diferentes opiniones sobre el sonido Abba de estas nuevas canciones, pero en general los fans responden cantando “Thank You for the Music” a la banda, mientras escuchan con entusiasmo nuevas composiciones del grupo por primera vez desde 1982.
