The group recently reunited in Sweden to receive the Royal Vasa Order from King Carl XVI Gustaf of the Swedish royal family for their contribution to music.

And while the group were thrilled to receive the nod from their king, the band members had a sobering moment of realisation that there are far less days ahead of them than there are behind.

Opening up on the Rosebud podcast, Björn recalled to show host Gyles Brandreth, "We stood there quietly, accepting it out of the king's hand and him saying a few words. It was a very quiet and very elegant ceremony.

"All four of us of course were there. In public we see each other very rarely, and Frida said to me afterwards, 'This might be the last occasion'."

He added, "Very sad, and I thought about that afterwards, but we're not getting any younger."

Björn Ulvaeus is pop music royalty, a founder member of one the most successful pop groups in history - ABBA. So when Gyles was given the opportunity to interview him at a special event in Bridlington, the Rosebud team hotfooted it up there to record it. What you're going to hear is a very special, wide-ranging and fascinating conversation about Björn's life and his incredible career. Björn grew up in Västervik, a small coastal town on Sweden's east coast. It was a happy childhood, but he knew his future lay beyond the little town, and it turned out that his guitar was his escape route. In this interview, Björn tells Gyles about meeting Benny, how they clicked immediately and started to write songs together. He tells Gyles about their songwriting process, which is riveting. He talks about the night ABBA won Eurovision, and the difficult period that followed. He talks about the band's split, and about the effect of fame on his family. Gyles and Björn also - exclusively - reveal that they've been writing a song together. Will it ever see the light of day? You'll have to listen to find out...

Our thanks to the team at Bridlington Business Day. And our thanks to Björn Ulvaeus and Christina Sas.

2 years as partner to ABBA Voyage

2 years as partner to ABBA Voyage

After two years as an official partner to ABBA Voyage, we can conclude that some things were hard to foresee.
“Two different worlds but still trying to do something that hasn’t been done before” says ABBA member Benny Andersson.
To be perfectly honest, the partnership in the beginning wasn’t crystal clear. It started with an ABBA Voyage-branded Oceanbird vessel sailing to the tones of “Eagle”, which Benny Andersson is playing beautifully on the piano in the film above, and naming a premium section in the ABBA Arena to the Oceanbird Lounge.
This is just what is seen on the outside, but on the inside, it is even more. Regular meetings about anything from how to best give back to the local community, to setting a sustainability roadmap.
“It has become a friendship more than anything else”, says Ludvig Andersson, Producer ABBA Voyage. “We strive at ABBA Voyage, as most of us do I suppose, to be as sustainable as possible. And there is Oceanbird who specializes in that. Suddenly we had access to a lot of knowledge and knowhow through our partner.”
“ABBA has never had a partner or a sponsor or any such thing because they never wanted that. But then this happened and suddenly we did want it because it was something else” says Ludvig Andersson.

Richard Jeppsson, Wallenius
Something worth going for
It was formed around shared values between pioneers: ABBA Voyage and Wallenius owner family (Oceanbird is a joint venture between Wallenius and Alfa Laval). Both ABBA and Wallenius have pushed the limits on what is possible in their fields, whether it´s new ways of making pop music and stage shows, or developing wind-powered ships.
“We realize more and more how similar our values are. We have expanded each other’s competences to new areas,” says Richard Jeppsson, SVP Wind Powered Projects at Wallenius Lines.
Benny Andersson, ABBA
ABBA member Benny Andersson also express how much he appreciate the partnership.
“Oceanbird is a great, great, great project. Such a fantastic innovation. It’s really something worth going for”.
ABBA Voyage supported 5,000 jobs
In the first year of the show, with 1 million tickets sold, ABBA Voyage contributed to a capital injection of £322.6 million to the local area in East London and supported more than 5,000 jobs, according to the independent study “ABBA Voyage, Economic Impact & Social Value Assessment” by Sound Diplomacy and social value consultancy RealWorth.
Other initiatives to benefit social sustainability are:
Calmer Concerts: an evening with accessibility for neurodiverse and autistic audiences with extra trained staff, reduced arena capacity and chill out zones
An educational workshop for 800 schoolchildren at the ABBA Arena during the summer months
Collaboration with the lesbian and gay mental health charity ELOP for Pride month
Sign-language shows: ticket holders receive a seat in a booth with the best view of the interpreter
“The success of ABBA Voyage shows how London is the music capital of the world,” he said. “I’m proud that City Hall was able to help ABBA bring this pioneering show to east London, providing huge benefits to both the local area and London’s wider economy” says London mayor Sadiq Khan, in Wallenius magazine Our Way.

I TOLD you I would.
Last week I tantalised with the story that I was off to the Far East to see ABBA.
Well I’m back with all the news from Bridlington where I was working at The Business Day conference.
The annual event at Bridlington Spa attracts a high level audience of business leaders from Hull and East Yorkshire to hear from an eclectic group of speakers.
The headliner last Friday was Björn Ulvaeus, co-founder of Swedish pop supergroup ABBA.
Looking slim, fit and trendily dressed in T-shirt, jacket and trainers without socks, the musician looked 20 years younger than a man pushing 80.
Host Giles Brandreth pointed out that Björn was a similar age to US president Joe Biden which provided something of a contrast given the Swede’s wit and easy conversation compared to Biden’s recent rather stilted appearances.
Brandreth, a highly accomplished public speaker, was an interviewer who asked rather eclectic questions.
If it was me in the chair, I’d have asked more questions about ABBA’s heyday and what they have been doing since stepping back from super stardom.
Giles chose to ask Björn about his earliest memory.
It was two lobsters racing across the kitchen floor of his childhood home in Sweden (his father ran a shipyard and the fishermen used to give him lobsters from their catch).
He also asked about his happiest and saddest memories from growing up.
When we got onto the ABBA story Giles pointed out that Sir Mick Jagger is still bopping about on stage at the age of 80 to bring home the bacon whereas Björn and his colleagues have recreated themselves as digital avatars in their pomp for the sold out hit show ABBA Voyage in London.
Having co-written Chess with Sir Tim Rice, the Swede also created the stage show Mamma Mia!, which later was made into two popular films.
He lives a relatively quiet life in Sweden with his girlfriend and admitted to Giles, that even at the height of ABBA’s fame, was able to live normally in Sweden, walking his children to school and going shopping, something he never could have done if he lived in the UK or US.
It was a fascinating conversation with a man, who as Brandreth pointed out, is perhaps the most successful person in popular music in the world.
What he was doing in Bridlington on a Friday afternoon in June is anyone’s guess, but a coup all the same.

ABBA star Bjorn Ulvaeus makes AI warning during Bridlington visit

ABBA star's AI tech warning to music industry

By Richard Madden, BBC News

Björn Ulvaeus has warned the use of artificial intelligence must not come at a cost to human influence
ABBA superstar Björn Ulvaeus believes artificial intelligence (AI) could lead to "spectacular things" for the music industry but has warned it must not come at a cost to the "human hand".

The 79-year-old made the comments to the BBC ahead of his appearance at a business conference being held at the Bridlington Spa in East Yorkshire on Friday.

The singer-songwriter also gave the thumbs up to the seaside town's fish and chips and revealed his disappointment at not being able to spend more time in the area.

"I planned to rent a car and drive around the north of England, but sadly, I have to go back home," he explained.

In a wide-ranging interview with BBC Look North, the musician said AI will be used to shape the future of his industry.

He said: "It's going to make song-writing different. Whether it's going to be better, I don't know but it's it's going to affect society as a whole.

"It could lead to spectacular things. On the other hand, we have to be very cautious so that it doesn't exclude the human songwriter or producer or artist.

"To be heard through the noise you really have to be very, very good. I think that it takes a human hand to add that extra little percentage needed to achieve a really good song."

'Still amazed'
Opening up on his ABBA career, Mr Ulvaeus described his band as "meticulous" and said he still finds it difficult to understand why they continue to be so popular.

"You can look at numbers and intellectually you understand and you acknowledge it. But emotionally it is very difficult to explain," he added.

"Over the years I've given it so much thought, but I just cannot explain it. I'm reminded of it almost every day and I'm still amazed."
