Según informa abba-official.com, Frida y su compañero Henry Smith fueron como invitados en Zermatt a la inauguración del nuevo hotal Boutique-Hotel-Backstage de Heinz Julen, un viejo amigo de Frida, el pasado 12 de abril. Y al día siguiente, en ese mismo hotel se celebró la presentación del Zermatt Unplugged Festival 2011, que se celebra estos días (entre el 12 y 16 de abril) en la localidad suiza donde Frida vive. En esta edición actuaron entre otros: David Gray, Roger Hodgson y Seal.

Frida chose an old ABBA friend Anders Glenmark as a producer of her new album. Glenmark - Swedish Lindsey Buckingham, is well-known for his good musical taste and modern sound. Glenmark is also known as a part of the duo Gemini produced by Björn and Benny in the middle 80s. He created a modern album with absolutely fabulous sound and Frida at her best voice abilities.

Fernando was originally released as a single in Sweden by Frida, where it topped the charts for 9 consecutive weeks and broke all records. Abba realised it had international potential and released their own single version in March 1976. It topped the charts in many countries, and stayed at no. 1 in Australia for 14 weeks, equalling Hey Jude by The Beatles.
Abba made their first tour to Australia in March 4-14 1976, and experienced Abbamania. Melbourne airport was beseiged by fans chanting for them when they arrived. The girls were moved to tears. Newspaper and tv headlines read "Abba fever hits Australia". Channel 9 recorded the tv special "The Best Of Abba", which included this performance of Fernando. The show was watched by 54% of the viewing public, more than watched the moon landing. They performed their biggest hits, with several costume changes. The tv producer declared "I have never worked with such an agreeable group of people. The image they present on screen - friendly, warm, bright, intelligent people - is exactly what they are. Complete modesty is the group's most refreshing quality".
Expessen published some astounding figures after the tour. Abba had 5 singles and 2 albums in the charts at the same time in Australia. Fernando was no. 1, Ring Ring was no. 4, Rock Me was no. 5, Mama Mia was no. 20 and SOS was no. 22. "Abba" and "The Best Of Abba" were numbers 1 and 2 in the album charts.
Public demand was so great, "The Best Of Abba" was screened several times and tv stations had to buy in foreign tv footage.

Söndagsintervjun. Efter sex års tystnad sjunger Anni-Frid Lyngstad igen, på gitarristen Jojje Wadenius album. För DN:s Georg Cederskog berättar Abbasångerskan om nya skivplaner och huruvida hon kommer att sjunga ihop med Agnetha Fältskog igen. 

Det är tjugonio år sedan Abba gav ut ett studioalbum, fjorton år sedan soloalbumet ”Djupa andetag” och sex år sedan hon över huvud taget sjöng på skiva.
Men stämman är intakt. Blank, rättfram.

– Frida har en ren, klar, mycket speciell, nästan säregen röst med skarpa kanter, stort omfång och fin klang i botten. Hon sjöng mycket unisont med Agnetha och måste då anstränga sig för att nå upp till hennes tonhöjder. Där var det metalliska inslaget påtagligt, och det, tror jag, skapade mycket av Abbasoundet, säger Björn Ulvaeus när DN ber honom att beskriva hennes vokala tillgångar.

Anni-Frid Lyngstads glansiga mezzosopran har mörknat, förstås, men inte mattats. Hon inleder Jojje Wadenius nya skiva ”Reconnection” med en särdeles gnistrande tagning i fyra fjärdedelar av ”Morning has broken”. Det krävs en riktig popdrottning – hennes formella namn är numera Anni-Frid Prinzessin Reuss Gräfin von Plauen – för att återuppliva Cat Stevens nötta lägereldsvisa.

– Upprinnelsen till det här projektet är att jag och Jojje är väldigt goda vänner, jag har känt hans hustru Brit sedan 1970-talet, hon är en av mina absolut närmaste väninnor, förklarar Lyngstad när DN når henne hemma i Zermatt, Schweiz.

– Vi har talat länge om att göra något ihop, och det här sammanhanget när man inte bär allt som ensam sångerska kändes fint att vara med i.

Hon prisar det musikaliska resultatet.

Utöver Wadenius karaktäristiskt lena jazzgitarr och scatsång rymmer ”Reconnection” gästspel av Helen Sjöholm, Nicolai Dunger, Peter Jöback, två Kleeruplåtar och dessutom blåser Nina Persson syre i Dire Straits psalmlika ”Brothers in arms”.

Anni-Frid Lyngstads beslut att medverka var inte utan vånda. Avgörandet föregicks av ett aktivt peppande:

– Brit kom och besökte mig här. Vi satt på kvällen och hade druckit lite vin och så spelade jag en skiva med Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, började sjunga lite till den och hon sade: ”Men du kan ju inte bara lägga av! Din röst sjunger för änglarna, du måste fortsätta”, (stort skratt). Så hon inspirerade mig att våga ta steget. Man behöver alltid höra att man är tillräckligt duktig.

Låtvalet var däremot enkelt. Inte bara för att hon alltid gillat Cat Stevens.
– När jag gifte mig med min man Russo, som gick bort för tio år sedan, hade vi just ”Morning has broken” som vår önskelåt i kyrkan. Så den är ett finare minne för mig än bara som en Cat Stevenslåt.

Abba må vara ett avlägset kapitel i Anni-Frid Lyngstads liv. Det är tjugosex år sedan hon flyttade till Schweiz. Men hon ”lever fortfarande med musiken”.

– Min musikaptit är väldigt stor, men jag lyssnar inte så mycket på Lady Gaga och den sortens musik, jag är kvar i min gamla inställning: Jag älskar soul och r&b och just nu för tillfället mycket Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, de hör till mina absoluta favoriter liksom Chicago – och TLC, de är fenomenalt bra.

Finns det andra musiker och låtskrivare som du skulle vilja samarbeta med?
– Jag drömmer inte på det sättet längre, men jag har många internationella musikervänner och det är klart att man pratar om att det skulle vara kul att göra något ihop. Mick Hucknall (sångare i det brittiska soulbandet Simply Red) är en nära vän och vi har ibland skojat om att göra något jazzigt ihop.

Några fler liveframträdanden av Anni-Frid Lyngstad kan fansen hur som helst sluta hoppas på.

– Nej, några sådana gör jag inte längre, det kan jag säga. Det skulle vara alldeles för påfrestande och nervöst. Det är som med alla arbeten; håller man inte på så tappar man rutinen och det skapar rampfeber – och den vill man inte så gärna deala med (skratt). Då låter jag hellre bli.

Hur skulle du beskriva din röst i dag? Hur har den utvecklats?
– Det som händer är förstås att röstregistret faller ner några pinnhål och den är mindre omfångsrik än när jag var yngre, men det händer ju alla sångare. Men samtidigt har den fått ett annat djup och mognad som kanske kan vara attraktivt.

På frågan om det finns någon kvalitet som sångerska som hon önskat sig väljer hon omedelbart Abbakollegan Agnetha Fältskogs.

– Det är nog så för alla sångare att när man lyssnar på varandra så finns det alltid någon annan som man tycker är fantastisk. Jag kan bara gå till Agne-
thas röst. Eftersom jag är mezzosopran så skulle jag aldrig kunna sjunga på det sättet. Jag är mycket lägre och det var därför vi balanserade varandra så väl. Vår röstkombination var väldigt lyckad, den är svår att hitta någon annanstans.

Har ni någon gång talat om att sjunga ihop igen?
– Vi pratar och skrattar om det ibland, men livet förändras, man blir äldre och det är så mycket annat som får betydelse och tar tid. Men det är klart att det skulle vara jättekul att göra något med Agnetha. Fast det är svårt, skulle vi göra något så skulle det bli under så otroligt pretentiösa former med alla krav och all press. Det finns en sådan nyfikenhet så att vi aldrig kan göra något opretentiöst, just därför tror jag inte att det blir av.

Hon är medveten om att det har varit långa uppehåll för henne mellan de offentliga sånginsatserna. Fast det betyder inte alls att hon saknar lusten eller viljan.

– Det finns alltid ett ljus som brinner inom en, att man skulle vilja göra någonting mera. Jojje och jag har faktiskt pratat vidare efter det här, så man vet ju aldrig.

Titeln på Wadenius-skivan ”Reconnection” talar särskilt till henne och hennes förhållande till musiken.

– Det man gör i vår ålder är att man går tillbaks till den musik som man har älskat i alla år och vill kanske göra den till sin egen på något sätt. Det är mer runt det temat som jag och Jojje tänker lite grann. Men vi får se, något beslut har inte tagits ännu, men det ligger ju nära till hands.

Hur ser du på den Abbafeber som rått under de senaste åren? Era skivor har återupprättats av kritikerna och nya generationer av lyssnare hittar er musik.

– När allting stämmer – som det gjorde i vår musik fast vi inte var riktigt medvetna om det då – så uppstår en kraft och en energi som inte tar slut utan lever vidare på många olika sätt. Det är en kvalitet som är svår att sätta fingret på och som är svår att efterapa. Ibland kanske den musiken vilar ett tag, men sedan händer något, som ett projekt som Abbamusikalen och filmen som jag älskar, och då väcks musiken till liv igen och tar fart bland nya generationer. Musiken blir ett arv. Jag har en stark känsla av att det alltid kommer att vara så med Abbas musik.

Abba visited Madrid in Spain on May 27-28 1979 to record 2 tv shows at the Roma Studios. The first show was "300 Millones" introduced by Spanish actress Paca Gabaldon in which they performed I Have A Dream (this video), Does Your Mother Know, Voulez-Vous and Chiquitita (in Spanish). The second show was "Aplauso" introduced by Silvia Tortosa in which they performed Does Your Mother Know, Chiquitita (in Spanish) and Voulez-Vous. The two programs were shown in Spain and Spanish speaking countries in South America in June.
The release of I Have A Dream coincided with the International Year Of The Child in 1979, and fittingly Abba decided to use 40 pupils from the children's choir of the International School of Stockholm to enhance the chorus. Benny recalls: "We sang it on tour in the States that autumn, and arranged for a children's choir to take part in the show in every city we performed in. They were sent the song in advance, they rehearsed and they came on stage singing it. I Have A Dream is as bit more folky, it's a song which marks a bit of a move back towards the schlager tradtion. There is a sitar playing which gives the song a very Greek feel, it sounds like a bouzouki. It's a sitar guitar being played by Janne Schaffer, the guitarist who worked with us from the beginning. The electric sitar looks like a guitar but there is something about the way that the strings are mounted that gives it that distinctive biting noise. It's wonderful to have good instruments to hand because when it comes to creating sounds you don't want to use the same sounds everybody else is using. We had 32 tracks in later years, we needed extra space for all the backing vocals and the synthesizer stuff that I wanted to add."
Bjorn says: "I Have A Dream was an attempt to modernise folklore with that kids choir. There were many who thought the choir was a bit over the top, but I don't agree - it felt right to have them there and it did work somehow. The choir goes well with the Italian-like melody and the lyrics sound positive. The choirs were of varying qualities. In some cities they had interpreted the children concept a bit generously, they were just as tall as we were! I've encountered a few people in America since who come up and say 'I was in that choir that year in that place'. 'Good' I always say 'I remember you...'.
I had forgotten where we had found the children's choir for the recording of I Have A Dream. Many years later I sent my two daughters Emma and Anna to the International School of Stockholm where they could be taught in English, because we had been living in England. The first time I went into the school I saw a large picture on the wall of Abba with a bunch of kids and it dawned on me that this school was where we had found the children's choir back in 1979. We had specifically wanted British and American children, so that they had the right pronounciation. On the tour of the States, my 6 year old daughter Linda first came out to sing with the local choir when we played Las Vegas. And 20 years later she appeared as Elin in our musical Kristina. She had told me that working in the theatre was the only thing she could contemplate doing."
I Have A Dream was recorded on March 27 1979 and had the working title "I Know A Song". It was released on the album Voulez-Vous on April 23 1979 and as the 4th single from it on December 5 1979 as a commemorative follow-up to Abba's concert tour of North America and Europe, with a live version of Take A Chance On Me from Wembley as the B-side. Top 10 positions were: Austria 1, Belgium 1, Cyprus 1, Holland 1, Ireland 2, South Afica 3, Switzerland 1, UK 2, West Germany 4 and Zimbabwe 7. A Spanish version called Estoy Soñando was recorded in September 1979 and also released as a single, reaching the top 5 in Argentine and Mexico and #9 in Spain. The final verse was sung in Japanese by a guest choir on the concert tour of Japan in March 1980.
