I maj kommer albumet ”A”.

The day Perth was struck by Abba feve

The day Perth was struck by Abba fever

It was 40 years ago today that Perth was struck by Abba fever.
It was a debilitating ear-worm affliction unlike anything the city had ever seen, carried to our shores by four singing invaders from the other side of the world.
It was almost impossible to resist. They had good looks, carefree spirits and catchy songs. Looking back, we never stood a chance.
I was one of the victims. And like tens of thousands of others, I still carry deep-rooted musical scars that might explain my cringe-worthy taste in music and Eurovision obsession.

On March 10, 1977, Swedish supergroup Abba played the first of five concerts in three days at the now-demolished Perth Entertainment Centre.
It was their final stop on a national tour that had drawn unprecedented crowd scenes in most capital cities.
Years later, Agnetha Faltskog (the blonde one) would try to explain the reaction of Australian fans. “There was fever, there was hysteria, there were ovations, there were sweaty, obsessed crowds,” she said.
“Sometimes it was awful. I felt as if they would get hold of me and I’d never get away again.”
Anni-Frid Lyngstad (Frida, the dark-haired one) said the band had no idea what awaited them in Australia. “It was overwhelming,” she said.
Abba spent just five days in Perth in 1977, bringing with them an entourage in excess of 100. It included famed Swedish director Lasse Hallstrom who was filming Abba: The Movie, which was released later that year.
It starred the now-disgraced actor Robert Hughes as a radio journalist seeking an interview with the group.

Much of the concert footage in the film was shot in Perth.
The West Australian’s Jill Crommelin reported on the group’s 1.30pm Perth arrival on a chartered plane that bore big red Abba letters on its side “with the first B backwards like some alien alphabet from the Baltic region”.
Crommelin wrote that about 400 fans greeted the group at Perth Airport, many shouting: “We want Abba.”
“The tarmac beside the aircraft was alive with cameramen, reporters and airport staff all waiting for the first glimpse of the four Swedish millionaires who have sold more records in Australia than anyone at any time,” she wrote.
Crommelin wrote that fans who gathered at the Parmelia Hotel were disappointed because Abba went straight to the Swan River for a sail.
“The girls brought their bikinis,” promoter Patti Mostyn told Crommelin.

X Factor winner, Isaiah Firebrace will follow in the footsteps of Guy Sebastian and Dami Im to represent Australia to a global audience in the Ukraine.
“They have not had any time off since they arrived in Australia and they wanted a swim.”
Two concerts were scheduled for the next day — at 6pm and 9pm. The first was marred by a bomb hoax and the 8000-strong audience had to clear the hall.

Benny told The West Australian that he was particularly worried about the threat because his son was in the audience.
After a short delay, the concert resumed. The second concert began 15 minutes late.
A third concert was held on March 11 at 9pm, with the fourth at 3pm and the fifth at 8.30pm on March 12.
I was one of more than 40,000 people who saw Abba perform in those five sold-out concerts.
I paid about $12 for my ticket — expensive by the day’s standard — for a good seat at the final concert. Tickets could only be bought through the mail.
Abba did not disappoint. They sang all their favourites — the Eurovision-winning Waterloo, SOS, When I Kissed the Teacher, Mamma Mia and mega-hit Fernando.
They also performed a mini-musical, The Girl with the Golden Hair — perhaps a pre-cursor to the full-blown musical Chess written by Benny and Bjorn seven years later.
Midway through the concert, they sang the quaint and never-released I Am An A — a song about the group that concluded: “We are a simple, four-letter word A-B-B-A.”
The encore, which featured Dancing Queen and Thank You for the Music, prompted a rush of hundreds of fans to the front of the stage for a closer look at their idols. The house lights went up and a party atmosphere erupted. And then it was over.
Abba left Perth at 7.30pm the next day, never to be seen on our shores again.
They came. They sang. They conquered.
