Frida, a surprise visit

From ABBA Voyage: "Over the past month we’ve welcomed the iconic Anni-Frid to the arena and celebrated a whole year since ABBA Voyage was announced!

A surprise visit
It was a pleasure to have Anni-Frid with us for the first time since the premiere in May. When asked about the experience of sharing the concert with the audience she said
'It lifts my spirits, it makes me emotional,
it creates love'

Watch ABBA's Frida make surprise appearance at ABBA Voyage concert

Tom Skinner

Many fans were unaware the singer was in attendance until the show finished

ABBA‘s Anni-Frid Lyngstad made a surprise appearance at last night’s ABBA Voyage show in east London.

The “revolutionary” concert series began in May at the purpose-built ABBA Arena in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. It sees digital versions of the Swedish pop icons perform a hits-filled set, backed by a 10-piece live band.

Following the finale of yesterday’s edition (September 15), an announcer made an unexpected revelation over the PA. “You have been in the presence this evening of Frida,” they said, “who sends her best wishes to you all.”

The crowd then began cheering as they spotted the singer waving from her seat. You can see a selection of photos and reactions below.

All four members of ABBA attended the opening night of ABBA Voyage earlier this year, marking their first group appearance in public in 36 years.

Speaking to NME on the red carpet, Lyngstad said it felt “fantastic” to be at the premiere with her bandmates.

“Really looking forward to seeing the show again,” she continued. “I’ve seen it once on Monday evening, and it’s just that feeling… you want to see it again and again because there are so many details you can’t comprehend by just seeing it once.”

She added: “I also want to see the audience’s reaction again, because they were standing, clapping, singing along, dancing, having an absolute fabulous time.”

Last November saw ABBA release their first new album in 40 years, which is also called ‘Voyage’.

The ABBA Voyage backing band was put together with the help of Klaxons’ James Righton, and features Little Boots (real name Victoria Hesketh) on keyboards, synths and backing vocals.

Hesketh previously explained that she was “a lifelong ABBA fan”, and said it was “an absolute honour” to be involved with the project. Check out NME‘s interview with the ABBA Voyage live band here.

In a five star review of ABBA Voyage, NME concluded: “Ageing rockers and poppers are bound to imitate the idea, but it’ll be a struggle to come close to the experience of ABBA Voyage. We for one welcome our new ABBAtar overlords, if only for giving these songs back to us in a totally new and joyful way.”

ABBA’s Frida thrills fans during surprise appearance at ‘ABBA Voyage’ concert

ABBA star Anni-Frid Lyngstad made a surprise appearance at ‘ABBA Voyage’ this week.
The singer thrilled fans when she showed up as an audience member during the group’s revolutionary digital concert.
Following the performance – which sees digital versions of the group perform with a 10-piece live band – her presence was announced to the stunned crowd.
Speaking over the PA, a voice said: “You have been in the presence this evening of Frida, who sends her best wishes to you all.”
As the audience began cheering, several members of the crowd spotted the singer waving from her seat and captured the moment on video.
The venue is purpose built for the show, which offers a 360-degree immersive experience, and speaking in Retro Pop’s August 2022 issue, producer Ludvig Andersson suggests they’re working on creating similar arenas around the world.
“The biggest dream is to stay in London and we build another one somewhere else,” he says. “Where that would be – I’d like to go places that are maybe not the obvious ones. It would be nice to take it to places that aren’t always visited by the big bands.
“The dream would be to have one somewhere in South America, one somewhere in Southeast Asia, one in North America. Who knows? But that’s the plan and we’re working on that already.”

ABBA planning massive shake-up of Voyage virtual residency with new songs

ABBA planning massive shake-up of Voyage virtual concert residency with new songs

The legendary band have recorded far more than the 22 songs their holograms belt out as they plan to review, remix and reorder tracks over the coming years and until long after they're dead

 9 Jul 2022

Fans of ABBA who have already enjoyed the thrill of their Voyage London residency concert will have reason to go back to see the show again – as the band plan to shake-up the setlist.

The group, consisting of Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, have been immortalised in holographic form at their purpose built concert hall in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park near Stratford in East London.

And while the foursome donned motion sensor outfits to record themselves singing to create their initial 22-track setlist and their 'ABBAtar' holograms, it has been confirmed that they recorded far more tunes in order for their resident concert to get a new breath of life when the time is right.

Benny’s son Ludvig has revealed that the group recorded so many songs that they will be able to keep changing up the setlist even after the stars have died.

ABBA have recorded enough songs for their Voyage residency to be revised for years to come ( Baillie Walsh)

He told The Sun: “We did more songs than we knew we were going to use. So there is more material.

“If this keeps running and people keep wanting to come and see it, we are intending to change a song out or update the show, because that’s also fun to do.”

He also hinted that other Voyage residency centres could be built around the world.

He said: “The dream would be to have one somewhere in South America, one somewhere in South East Asia, one in North America.”

Devout ABBA fans wishing for more new music following the release of Voyage last year, which topped charts in the UK and around the globe, will need to keep on wishing.

Benny last year signalled that the group would never again make any more music - despite the success.

He told The Guardian: “I never said myself that Abba was never going to happen again… But I can tell you now: this is it.”

While Bjorn also made this view clear during a chat with The Sun, commenting: “When you do a thing like that, you don’t know how people will receive it. It was with such pride that we released that album.

“I don’t think there will be any more music with ABBA. I think that was definitely our last album.”

The 10 track album, Voyage, was released in November last year – however it is reported there were two extra tracks recorded for the album which ultimately didn’t make the final cut.

It is expected these two discarded tracks will never be released as the band have vowed not to release any more music – despite the success of the album, which was their first in 40 years.

ABBA's Bjorn on 'unbelievable' moment he sat behind fans as they watched concert

“We were sitting away back in the darkness, so nobody saw us,” Bjorn Ulvaeus laughs.

“Benny was there and Frida, we just looked at ourselves and thought, ‘What the hell is this. How did this happen?’”
Monday night’s clandestine mission was the first time Bjorn, 77, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, 76, and Benny Andersson, 75, had seen the reaction from fans to their digitally created younger avatars – or ABBA-tars.
It came ahead of the premiere this week, where it is hoped all four members of the band, including Agnetha Faltskog, 72, will appear.

ABBA's Bjorn on 'unbelievable' moment he sat behind fans as they watched concert Tom Bryant — ABBA legend Bjorn Ulvaeus has confessed he and three of his band members secretly watched fans react to their concert- which sees younger ABBA-tars of the group sing the hit tunes 21:12, 24 May 2022 Most people will not have clocked the party of three in their seventies as they quietly took to their seats in the new ABBA Arena in London’s Olympic Park. After all, they were right at the back, the lights were down… and all the attention was on the stage. “We were sitting away back in the darkness, so nobody saw us,” Bjorn Ulvaeus laughs. “Benny was there and Frida, we just looked at ourselves and thought, ‘What the hell is this. How did this happen?’” Monday night’s clandestine mission was the first time Bjorn, 77, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, 76, and Benny Andersson, 75, had seen the reaction from fans to their digitally created younger avatars – or ABBA-tars. ABBA split up in 1982 but have remained close friends since It came ahead of the premiere this week, where it is hoped all four members of the band, including Agnetha Faltskog, 72, will appear. “It was unbelievable,” Bjorn says. “For the time fans are in the arena, they believe we are real and are on stage. They’re at a concert with ABBA. “We’re playing tricks with people’s minds and they’re willing to let us.” Promoted Stories He admits he got emotional seeing his younger self, created with the help of George Lucas’s visual effects company. “It was a special moment for me and my entire family who are coming over to watch. "Many are too young to have seen me on stage. It was very emotionally charged to say the least.” Last year the band shocked the world by releasing their Voyage album, which topped the charts in 17 countries. Bjorn remembers vividly the moment he knew a reunion was well and truly on. He describes being in a Swedish recording studio with Agnetha and Anni-Frid, who, up until then, had not sung his songs for more than 40 years. “Benny and I held our breath in the control room looking forward through this big window,” Bjorn says. “They were stood opposite each other, with their lyrics on a music stand. Here we were, the moment of truth.” Despite the world not having heard their harmonies live since 1982, their voices were pitch perfect. It was almost like stepping back in time. “They took their first notes and musically it sounded as ABBA as ever,” he says. “Up until that moment, we had no idea as to whether to carry on or give up.” Given their history, it is no surprise the reunion meant so much. As two married couples – Agnetha to Bjorn, and Anni-Frid to Benny –their upbeat harmonies and chord progressions hid turmoil behind the scenes as both marriages faltered. Agnetha and Bjorn, who had two children, divorced in 1979, followed by Benny and Anni-Frid in 1981. The band split in 1982, with their last public performance coming three years later on a Swedish version of This Is Your Life, which honoured their manager Stig Anderson. But against this backdrop, the band have remained close friends. “Agnetha and I have met almost every Christmas and other birthdays. Freda comes to Stockholm a lot and we meet. We’re always in touch via email or text message.” The group performed together for the first time in decades in 2016 at a private event which marked the 50th anniversary of the first meeting between songwriters Bjorn and Benny. Offers poured in for a reunion, including a £600million deal for a 100-date world tour in 2000. “Most of the offers didn’t even reach us… such as some sheikh in the Gulf,” he laughs. “We had short brief conversations about some offers, but touring again would have been something that we would have looked on at in horror. So we said no very quickly.” And they did not need the money... After the split, the band became an even bigger commercial entity. Their 1992 greatest hits album ABBA Gold became the second biggest-selling album in the UK, and the Mamma Mia musicals spawned two films. The fact they remain relevant delights Bjorn. And he laughs when reminded of Boris and Carrie Johnson’s ABBA party at the centre of the No10 lockdown row. “It’s great they’re ABBA fans, it’s great anyone is playing ABBA, but domestic politics is something I won’t meddle in,” he laughs. Asked if Boris had met his Waterloo, Bjorn lets out a chuckle and declares: “No comment.” Skipping past politics, he says he has a love affair with the UK, ever since their Eurovision win in Brighton in 1974. Although he laughs as he remembers how “Britain gave us zero points”. Away from work, Bjorn loves to fuss over his grandchildren. “I’ve managed to be quite grounded and they see me as a grandfather first, although sometimes they say, ‘Why isn’t granddad on television today?’. “I am sure they have seen some of the embarrassing outfits and sometimes they comment but I don’t mind.” Bjorn looks in great shape, which he puts down to “surf-ski” sessions in which he paddles on an open kayak. “They are very fast and wobbly,” he laughs. “I have a summer house in the outer Stockholm Archipelago. It’s the most wonderful thing a human being can do. I just love it.”
