WHEN I found out ABBA were reuniting, I let out a little yelp in the middle of a news conference at The Sun.
The leaders of North and South Korea had met for historic talks that morning, but as a superfan of the world’s biggest ever pop group, this news was momentous in its own way.

The prospect of an ABBA comeback had long been dismissed as impossible. In fact, our front page the next day combined both ­bombshell reunions with the now-iconic headline: Mamma Mia: Korea We Go Again!

While no longer together romantically, the thought of Agnetha Fältskog and Björn Ulvaeus, and Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad back working together in a studio in Stockholm was enough to send me on a pilgrimage to the Swedish capital synonymous with their name.

So for my birthday this year, I dragged three friends to sing Thank You For The Music with me at ABBA The Museum, party until the early hours in the immersive Mamma Mia! The Party — a theatrical and dining experience based on their music — and spend far too much money buying enough memorabilia to last a lifetime. (ABBA Monopoly, anyone?)

Then something special happened. An email drops into my inbox. Björn — one of the driving forces behind ABBA today — has heard I’m in town celebrating my birthday and wants to take me for breakfast. Tomorrow.

I’m over the moon, obviously, and expecting a large entourage and the type of demands that come with today’s superstars. But I get a firm response. Björn wants to come to your hotel. No fuss and certainly no special treatment.

So I pulled on my newly purchased ABBA slogan T-shirt (“It might look like I’m listening to you, but in my head I’m listening to ABBA!) and await the arrival of one of the greatest pop masterminds of all time — and one of the most famous men in Sweden.

Björn, 73, lives just north of the hotel I am staying at in the centre of Stockholm. He’s driven himself and arrives alone. Within minutes, I’m asking about that moment when the band first reunited in Benny’s studio on an island in the middle of the city.

“That was so perfect in a way,” he smiles. “It was like going into the studio 40 years ago. Suddenly when we were standing there, the realisation came: This is kind of natural but weird at the same time. It’s been 35 years.”

ABBA are not interested in the Bohemian Rhapsody-style treatment of their life in film.

Björn says: “No, not while still being alive at least. I would hate to see myself. If someone is writing my part then I would have to be involved myself with inventing lines for myself.”

He has been asked to judge every talent show, including X Factor and The Voice, but says: “I don’t know, I’m in two minds. Sometimes they produce spectacular things. But then again, I love the idea of especially a group growing together organically.

“Finding each other organically and then something happens – because I’m part of such a band.

“The Beatles were the same and the Stones.”

The iconic ABBA harmonies “came back naturally” too, more than three decades on.

“The ladies are a tone lower which is completely natural, that’s what happens,” he explains. But the quality, the timbre, and the story-telling qualities, all of that is still there.

“It’s amazing, they started singing and, wow, it’s ABBA. It’s a fantastic sound. It’s inside Benny and I and all the ladies to feel what is right for ABBA and what is wrong.”

Wow. This is genuinely soul-enhancing for me to hear. As for any post-relationship awkwardness, it’s clear that has long since dissipated. Björn sees his ex Agnetha “quite often”.

“We have two kids together and, let’s see, five grandchildren,” he says. “It’s Christmas, it’s birthdays. I see her all the time. So that was normal.”

Initially, the re-formed ABBA recorded two songs together, but now there is a whole album on the way.

“So the world has heard,” he smiles, knowingly. “I heard that too.” The first tracks were meant to be released at Christmas, but it is technology holding up the release.

ABBA have partnered with Pop Idol mastermind Simon Fuller to launch intricate hologram versions of the band from at their peak — dubbed the “ABBA-tars” — that will perform in a new music video and then tour the world.

Björn says: “Simon Fuller came to us with the idea of the digital humans. The heads will be from 1979. The voices will be from now. It’s taking too bloody long, it is the digitisation of ourselves which is taking much longer than we thought.

“It’s such hard work, it’s literally copies of ourselves and you will not see it’s not a human being. You see the clothes and every pore is taken care of — every hair, everything. So you can go as close as you want to and it looks like a real human being.

“They create the heads first — that’s a library of face muscles and everything else, so then they can create the rest much quicker. What we’re aiming for now is to finish that video so we can show the world this is what it is and I hope that will be this autumn.”

So ground-breaking is the concept, Björn can’t find the word to describe it, saying: “It’s like a hybrid of everything. It’s more than a show, different to a concert. So let’s call it an experience. The ABBA-tars will talk to the audience.”

Björn says there is no chance of ABBA ever performing together again

Will he go and watch? He thinks for a moment, then muses: “I could. That’s going to be weird.”

However, for anyone hoping for a live performance with the four human members, that remains out of the question.

“We never said we would never record again. We said we would never perform again,” Björn says firmly. “I definitely stand by that — there’s no bloody way. It would be such a hassle.

“I mean we had this incredible offer ages ago, to go on a tour for a year and doing all kinds of promotions and you made a lot of money, yes. But it would have taken ten years out of our life with stress. At that point we thought no, all four of us.”

BJÖRN has been in London for the past few weeks working on Mamma Mia! The Party, auditioning the cast and collaborating with Great British Bake Off’s Sandi Toksvig on the script.

He says: “We fell in love the first time we met – I love her, she’s so great and so intelligent. And so she was the first one I wanted to have once we knew it was actually happening.”

He lived in the UK after ABBA split between 1984 and 1990.

As well as celebrating 20 years of the musical on the West End, he is intimately involved in transforming a large space at London’s O2 Arena that used to be a nightclub into the Mamma Mia! The Party experience.

He says: “They ripped everything out, so it’s like an empty shoebox and inside that, as we speak, we’re building Nikos Taverna. We’ve made a fountain and everything. Everything will feel like a holiday in Greece.”

Having been in Stockholm, I even loved The Party experience despite not being able to understand a word of the Swedish script.

I want to know more about the reunion. Björn says he and Benny spent about two months writing the new ABBA songs. There’s something about their traditional approach, without the whizzbang technology available to songwriters today, that made them work hard to come up with hits.

“I thought the other day about song-writing that maybe people settle for less now because it sounds so good from the outset,” he says. You can have a whole symphony orchestra, whereas we were two guys without the best voices in the world in a room with a stand-up piano and an acoustic guitar.

"You have to make that exciting, so the melody has to be really good. We never settled. It’s never good enough, you know, we really felt, this is it. And you can feel that, it’s strange. And every note is in the right place in a song.”

The band’s priority was always making magical songs, rather than making megabucks on the road. “I mean life on the road is antisocial,” he argues.

“All four of us had like domestic careers before and we knew everything begins a song — that’s the most important thing of this whole business. Don’t ever forget that, touring is bulls**t. Benny and I worked office hours for months to write three songs.”

MOST READ IN TV & SHOWBIZ
Björn is attempting to reunite the band once more publicly to open Mamma Mia! The Party in London this autumn. He says: “I hope they’ll come, I really do. I’m working on it to make it easy for everyone. I think coming into that room together will be wow.”

For Björn, it will be a rare showbiz moment in a very low-key life that he leads in Sweden, where his family always bring him back to earth. He laughs: “One of my grandchildren, I was singing something the other day and she said, ‘You don’t have a very good voice, Grandad.’”

Millions of ABBA fans like me all over the world know that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Shakespeare writes about a man, who “sold his goodly manor for a song”. The way I read it, the Bard implies that “a song” would be worth very little, if not to himself, at least to the people in his audience. A song is such a weightless, elusive phenomenon. How can anyone put a value on that?

Ever since Shakespeare’s day, “for a song” has been an idiom that represents something you get very cheaply. The YouTubes of this world know this, and they’d like to keep it that way. They say thank you for the music and make millions off songs we all love and cherish while the writer gets a pittance.

I’m not complaining because I personally get too little, I’m complaining because it’s galling that the tech giants keep so much. And when it comes to less fortunate songwriters than myself I’d much rather they got a larger share, so that they can afford to work on their art, writing full-time.

The European Union copyright directive is being voted on this week and that is what it is about. It is about creating a fairer and more level playing field between the creative community and the tech giants. There’s a “value gap” between them, and the latter are ferociously defending it.

It seems those who support the tech giants would like us to think the directive is about other things. But is it credible that alarming, warlike headlines like these stem from agitated EU citizens: ‘Shocking update on the copyright directive’; ‘Today Europe lost the internet’; ‘How the new copyright laws will destroy the internet’; ‘EU to end the internet’?

I don’t believe so. Does the copyright directive fascinate and stir the minds of EU citizens in such a way? Have you heard people talking about it in the street? It almost makes you think that this grassroots uproar may have been created in order to make it look as if the EU is acting against the “will of the people”.

Conspiracy theories aside, the copyright clause in the US constitution of 1787 states that it is intended “to promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries”. It was a good idea then and it is still a good idea now. If content creators of all forms can live off their work, they will become better at their craft and that will ultimately be good for society. This is the core of the EU copyright directive and I think all content creators should support it.

After all, “Without a song or a dance what are we?”

Em uma música que você ouve no Spotify, há muito mais pessoas envolvidas do que o artista ou a banda que aparecem nos créditos. Músicos, compositores, engenheiros e produtores trabalharam para fazer essa faixa acontecer. Fossem outros tempos, essa informações viriam impressas na capa do LP. Mas, hoje, precisam fazer parte do arquivo de música. É a partir desses dados que se identifica que uma faixa de determinado músico foi tocada X vezes. Esses números determinam quanto será pago de royalties, por exemplo.

O problema é fazer com que os compositores e os músicos façam o registro de todas as pessoas envolvidas no processo. Além disso, é preciso preencher todos os códigos internacionais de gravação – números que associam uma faixa a um artista, álbum e gravadora. Com essas dificuldades em mente, alguns músicos, criadores de conteúdo e produtores se uniram a empresários do setor para criar uma plataforma de registro de música chamada Session.

A iniciativa envolve pessoas como Bjorn Ulvaeus, guitarrista e compositor da banda ABBA e sócio da plataforma de metadados musicais Auddly; Niclas Molinder, compositor e cofundador da Auddly; Max Martin, produtor de músicas de artistas como Taylor Swift e Britney Spears; François Quereuil, diretor de produtos de áudio da AVID; Barak Moffitt, vice-presidente de estratégia de conteúdo da Universal Music; e Phil Sant, engenheiro-chefe da Stage Enterprises.

- Det er bedre å se at folk folk får tårer i øynene av musikken vår, enn å stå på en scene.

That is a bit sad anyway. When Abba announced in April 2018, 35 years after the band's release, to release two new songs and to go on tour with a hologram show, Palm was not privy to it. Abba-Historiker ist kein Ausbildungsberuf. Es gibt weder Studiengänge noch Diplom und sachlich nüchtern betrachtet auch keinen Anlass dafür. Doch geht’s um Abba, ist Carl Magnus Palm eben alles – bloß nicht nüchtern. Der Mann ist Abba-Historiker, was im Falle des Mittfünfzigers bedeutet: Er weiß alles über Schwedens vierköpfige Hitfabrik – harte Fakten, Trivia, Hintergründe und Quatsch. Alles. Sowohl für die Fans als auch für die Popgruppe selbst fungiert er als Datenbank. Palm veröffentlichte mehrere Bücher über Abba. Er erinnert sich besser als die Band selbst.

„Wahrscheinlich bin ich die einzige Person auf der Welt, die ihren Lebensunterhalt damit verdient, den ganzen Tag Musik von Abba anzuhören und darüber zu schreiben“, sagt Palm. Hier in Stockholm wird er wie der verlängerte Arm, so eine Art irdischer Stellvertreter von Abba gesehen.

Als Abba im April 2018, 35 Jahre nach der Bandauflösung, ankündigten, zwei neue Lieder zu veröffentlichen und mit einer Hologramm-Show auf Tournee zu gehen, da war Palm nicht eingeweiht. Er musste das im Toskana-Urlaub erfahren, Freunde hatten die Meldung im Radio gehört und ihn telefonisch darüber informiert.

Wie die neuen Lieder klingen? Er weiß es auch nicht. Doch ganz geübter Faktenchecker weiß er zumindest schon einiges darüber: „Eines der Stücke soll im 6/8-Takt gehalten sein“, sagt Palm. Das sei nicht nur interessant, sondern auch eine Art flotter Walzer. In ähnlichem Tempo sei auch das Stück „Cassandra“ von 1982 gehalten, sagt er. Das war die B-Seite der Single „The Day Before You Came“.

ABBA-tare auf Tour
Die Idee, nicht selbst auf Tournee zu gehen, sondern mit digitalen Avataren und Hologramm-Technik zu arbeiten, gefällt Palm. Es sei die Möglichkeit, Abba so zu erleben, wie sie damals waren. Denn die - Palm lacht und sagt „Abba-tare“ – sollen an die goldenen Zeiten von Abba 1979 angepasst sein. Längst verstorbene Künstler wie Tupac, Roy Orbison und Ronnie James Dio fanden so in den vergangenen Jahren ihren Weg zurück auf die Bühne. Frank Zappa blüht das im April 2019. Und das ist ein bisschen lustig: Denn dann sind sie abermals vereint im alten Spruch „von Abba bis Zappa“. Abba, wenigstens das, leben noch.

„Happy sad“, sagt Palm immer wieder beim Spaziergang durch das Freiluftmuseum Skansen auf der Stockholmer Halbinsel Djurgården. Glücklich und gleichzeitig traurig sei die Musik von Abba. Hier im Freilichtmuseum liegt auch das Atelier des schwedischen Malers Julius Kronberg. Dort ließen sich Abba für das Covermotiv ihres letzten gemeinsamen Albums ablichten. „The Visitors“ erschien 1981 und ist auch das seltsamste Album von Abba. Das Cover war düster, distanzierte Anmutung, die Bandmitglieder weit voneinander vor einem wandhohen Gemälde Kronbergs platziert. Die Musik klang ähnlich distanziert.

Auf Welttournee mit ABBA
Saxofonist Ulf Andersson ist beim Spaziergang im Skansen auch dabei. Der 78-Jährige ist durch und durch Musiker, er trägt sein Saxofon mit sich herum. Früher war Andersson einer dieser Mietmusiker, versiert am Instrument, vertraut mit Musiktheorie und der Gabe, sich Lieder schnell aneignen zu können. Als Studiomusiker spielte er 1975 „I do I do I do I do I do“ für Abba ein und es folgten noch einige Titel, 1977 ging er mit Abba auf Welttournee.

Heute irgendwie auch wieder: „Abbamania The Show“ nennt sich das. Eine Tribute-Show mit Band, Orchester und der Musik von Abba – so wie es sich 1977 oder 1979 wahrscheinlich beim Konzert angefühlt hätte. Agnetha ist hier allerdings Camilla Dahlin und Anni-Frid heißt Katja Nord – auch so irdische Stellvertreter. Beide gründeten 1996 eine Abba-Coverband, fahren seit mehr als zehn Jahren schon mit der Abbamania-Show durch die Weltgeschichte. Als Abba-Ersatz haben sie mittlerweile mehr Konzerte gespielt als der Prototyp selbst.

Casting für Abbamania
Langsam werden Camilla und Katja müde und wollen sich nur noch um die künstlerische Leitung dieser Zeitreise kümmern. Sie suchen zwei neue Sängerinnen, Ersatz für den Ersatz. „Und ich hätte gerne wieder meine echte Haarfarbe zurück“, lacht Katja, die als Anni-Frid natürlich immer sehr rote Haare tragen muss. Beim Casting singen sich sechs Frauen in zwei Kostümen immer wieder durch „Fernando“ und „Dancing Queen“, bis Cecilia Blomberg (Agnetha) und Maria Höglund (Anni-Frid) für würdig befunden werden, das Erbe der Erben anzutreten. Bennys und Björns werden nicht gecastet, die waren auch bei Abba eher im Hintergrund aktiv.

Wie diese Hintergrundarbeit aussieht, zeigt sich im Abba-Museum, im Untergeschoss des Pop House Hotels – ebenfalls auf der Insel Djurgården, zwischen Vasa-Museum und dem Vergnügungspark Gröna Lund. Das von Björn Ulvaeus erdachte Abba-Museum wurde 2013 eröffnet. Auf rund 5 000 Quadratmetern gibt’s da die Geschichte der Band anhand von Gold- und Platinplatten, Instrumenten, Zeitungsschnipseln, Kostümen, Videos, Audioguides, Karaoke – und die Möglichkeit, gemeinsam mit Hologrammfiguren von Abba gemeinsam auf der Bühne zu stehen. Mehr Abba geht nur, wenn sie selbst vor Ort wären. Ein rotes Telefon in einer Ecke kokettiert zumindest mit der Möglichkeit, sie würden gelegentlich in den Ausstellungsräumen anrufen. Und es ist auch der Ort, an dem die Abba-Ultras der Welt zusammenlaufen, gemeinsam in der Karaokebox singen und sich gegenseitig versichern, wie fantastisch Abba sind. Mehr Abba geht kaum, auch in der nach oben offenen Skala in Stockholm.

ABBA has confirmed their new music has been delayed until later this year.

The Swedish group, who split up 35-years-ago, were expected to release two new songs as part of a virtual music experience in December 2018.

However, in September Agnetha Fältskog, Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Anni-Frid Lyngstad revealed the project, titled Virtual Abba, had been delayed until 2019.

A representative for the group told Variety that the songs, I Still Have Faith In You and Don’t Shut Me Down, may now not surface until autumn.

The representative said: “No release before the summer. Hopefully this fall.”

They gave no reason for the delay, but Andersson recently told IceTheSite that legal complications had arisen after the announcement of their reunion.

He said: “When that press release [about the TV show and recordings] came out, everything was up and running smoothly, then it didn’t run as smoothly.

“We are still trying to establish the agreement that needs to be done to be able to continue. We are good. It’s the other side, everything that has to be done, everything that has to be drawn. It’s delayed. It’s not our doing.”

Standard Online has contacted representatives of ABBA for comment.

The songs are set to be performed by the group’s “digital selves” in a TV special produced by Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller.

The super group shocked fans after they announced they are reuniting, in April last year.

In an Instagram post, the group revealed it was an “unexpected consequence” of their decision to put on a “virtual reality tour.”

The statement read: “The decision to go ahead with the exciting ABBA avatar tour project had an unexpected consequence. We all four felt that, after some 35 years, it could be fun to join forces again and go into the recording studio. So we did. And it was like time had stood still and that we only had been away on a short holiday. An extremely joyful experience!”

Ulvaeus hinted that the band could release a new album, telling the Standard in October: “A new album, possibly. Or four songs or something like that — that’s possible. But for us to perform on stage that’s just not going to happen. That’s a definite.”

Nyheten om att alla fyra medlemmar i Abba hade återförenats slog ned som en bomb i fjol. Men det handlade inte om någon regelrätt comeback, utan om två nya låtar som spelats in i en studio på Skeppsholmen i Stockholm 2017.

ABBA's business partner Gorel Hanser has claimed the band's new music won't be released until much after summer

ABBA's new music has reportedly been pushed back until after the summer.

The 'Dancing Queen' hitmakers haven't made a studio LP since 1981's 'The Visitors' but Bjorn Ulvaeus and the other three members – Agnetha Faltskog, Benny Andersson and Frida Lyngstad – have recorded two brand new tracks, one of which is titled 'I Still Have Faith In You', for an upcoming BBC documentary, and the other 'Don't Shut Me Down'.

However, spokesperson for the Swedish pop stars, Gorel Hanser, has insisted they will only be releasing the two tracks this year, not a record, and it's likely they may not come out till the latter end of 2019.

According to the Daily Star newspaper, their business partner said: "The songs will definitely not come before the summer, possibly afterwards.

"There will be two songs released. No album."

Though Gorel has shut down the possibility of an album being released, Bjorn previously teased that a full album could come out following the "wonderful" experience the foursome shared in the studio.


Speaking in October, he said: "A new album? Possibly. Or four songs or something like that – that's possible."


However, he was adamant that the band will never tour again and instead fans will have to get their ABBA live fix from their 'Abbatar' holograms which will go on a digital tour either in 2019 or 2020.


Bjorn added: "But for us to perform on stage that's just not going to happen. That's a definite."


Back in July, Bjorn delighted ABBA fanatics everywhere by revealing details of the two fresh tracks.


He said: "One of them is a pop tune, very danceable. The other is more timeless, more reflective, that is all I will say. It is Nordic sad, but happy at the same time."


ABBA's music is once again at the forefront of popular culture because of the 'Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again' film, which is soundtracked by the group's hits, and was released last year.

Still, you can comfort yourself with the prospect of an ABBA hologram tour which might kick off later this year – just in time for the release of those two new songs, then.

El proyecto se anunció por primera vez en 2016, y estaba previsto que se estrenara, a través de las versiones digitales de los miembros de la banda, en NBC y ABC a finales del año pasado. Sin embargo, en septiembre el grupo anunció que el proyecto se retrasó hasta 2019, y ahora llega la noticia de que las canciones, que se llaman "I Still Have Faith In You" y "Don't Shut Me Down, pueden retrasarse hasta septiembre.



"No hay estreno antes del verano", dice un representante del grupo a Variety. "Espero que esta primavera". Stockholm. Es war eine Sensation, als Abba seine Wiedervereinigung im vergangenen Frühjahr bekannt gab. Neue Songs sollten im Dezember folgen, später hieß es Anfang 2019. Nun sagt die Managerin unserer Redaktion "auf keinen Fall vor dem Sommer".

Mamma Mia, wie lange müssen Fans noch auf die neuen Abba-Songs warten? Laut neuen Informationen unserer Redaktion wird die Veröffentlichung nun nochmals verschoben: "Die Songs kommen auf keinen Fall vor dem Sommer, möglicherweise danach", sagte Ex-Abba-Managerin Görel Hanser (70), die oft als Abbas fünftes Mitglied bezeichnet wird, auf Nachfrage.

Im vergangenen Jahr hatte sich die Kultgruppe überraschend wiedervereinigt. Im April war bekannt geworden, dass sich alle vier Abba-Mitglieder erstmals seit gut 35 Jahren für Aufnahmen im Stockholmer Studio getroffen hatten.

Präsentiert werden sollte zumindest einer der neuen Songs schon im Dezember in einer TV-Sendung der Sender BBC und NBC. Weil Abba auch eine Welttournee mit digital animierten Abbildern der Bandmitglieder für 2019 plante und wohl auch bewerben wollte, sollten diese digitalen Kopien auch in den TV-Sendungen die Songs "vorspielen" – statt der echten Bandmitglieder. Doch der TV-Auftritt wurde abgesagt. Sang- und klanglos. "Es war für das Jahresende geplant, aber wir sprechen jetzt vom Anfang des nächsten Jahres", sagte Frontmann Björn Ulvaeus noch im September gegenüber dem "Daily Star".

Kein komplettes Album geplant
Nun müssen sich Fans wohl doch noch einige Monate gedulden. Man wüsste auch noch überhaupt nicht, wie die Songs aufgeführt werden. "Es ist noch nicht geklärt, ob sie bei der BBC oder anderweitig präsentiert werden", sagte Hanser. Sie widerspricht den Gerüchten über ein ganzes, neues Abba-Album: "Nein, es werden nur zwei Songs veröffentlicht, kein Album."

Tournee mit Abba-Avataren frühestens nächstes Jahr
Vielen Fans bleibt trotzdem unklar, warum die Fertigstellung von zwei Liedern so lange dauert. Auch bei der Planung der Welttournee mit Avataren scheint es Rückschläge gegeben zu haben. Die wurde zunächst für 2019 angekündigt. "Es wird frühestens 2020 eine Abba-Avatar-Tournee geben", sagt Hanser dieser Zeitung.

Die Projekte von Abba nach dem vorläufigen Aus der Band

Vor allem dank des geschäftstüchtigen Ulvaeus hat die zwischenzeitlich über 35 Jahre inaktive Band aus Schweden ungewöhnlich viele zusätzliche, kommerziell sehr erfolgreiche Formate am Laufen.

Da ist das weltweit aufgeführte Abba-Musical "Mamma Mia!" (Uraufführung 1999) dann die Hollywood-Filme "Mamma Mia!" (2008) und "Mamma Mia 2!" (2018). Einen dritten Teil will Ulvaeus nicht ausschließen.

Hinzu kommt das interaktive Abba-Museum in Stockholm und das Festformat "Mamma Mia – the Party", wo Gäste in den Kulissen einer den Filmen ähnelnden griechischen Taverne in Stockholm als aktive Showteilnehmer zu Abba-Liedern trinken und feiern können. Die beliebte Partyreihe kommt im Herbst auch nach London und – was bislang nicht bekannt war – noch vor dem Jahreswechsel nach Berlin, wie Ulvaeus der Zeitung "Expressen" kürzlich.

Spekuliert wird auch, ob es vielleicht Streit in der Band gab. Die vier Bandmitglieder Agnetha Fältskog (68) die einst mit Bandkollege Benny Andersson (72) verheiratet war, und Björn Ulvaeus (73), der mit Anni-Frid Lyngstad (73) verheiratet war, sollen Abba auch aufgelöst haben, weil die beiden Paare im Laufe ihrer Beziehungen in Streitigkeiten geraten waren. Abba-Frontman Björn Ulvaeus beschrieb die Abba-Wiedervereinigung noch vor einigen Monaten als sehr harmonisch gegenüber unserer Redaktion: "Ich muss sagen, dass sich das total fantastisch angefühlt hat. Wie klingen die beiden neuen Abba-Songs?

Zur Frage, wie die beiden neuen Abba-Songs "I Still Have Faith In You" und "Don't Shut Me Down" klingen, verriet Ulvaeus unserer Redaktion: "Sie klingen sehr nach Abba. Einer von den beiden Songs ist nicht so sehr Disco, er ist im 6/8-Takt komponiert. Aber beide werdet ihr als richtige Abba-Songs wiedererkennen. Mehr sage ich nicht. Ihr müsst einfach abwarten, bis sie rauskommen."

Ob Ulvaeus überhaupt den weltweiten Hype und die freudige Ungeduld bezüglich der neuen Abba-Songs versteht? "Nun ja, eigentlich nicht, wenn ich ehrlich sein soll. Wir dachten eher, dass wir Schritt für Schritt wieder in Vergessenheit geraten würden, als wir 1982 Abba auflösten", sagte er. "Aber es ist schön, dass unsere Musik noch immer so geschätzt wird."

Abba hat alleine zwischen 1972 und 1982 mehr als 400 Millionen Platten verkauft. Den internationalen Durchbruch feierte die Popgruppe aus Schweden 1974 beim Grand Prix d'Eurovision mit dem Lied "Waterloo". Das letzte Abba-Album "The Visitors" erschien 1981, 1982 trennte sich die Gruppe. Die neuen Aufnahmen werden dementsprechend als Sensation gehandelt und fanden in größter Heimlichkeit statt. Nicht einmal gute Freunde aus der Stockholmer Musikszene wussten davon, wie sie der Lokalpresse verrieten.

Weil sie bis heute über 400 Millionen Tonträger verkauft haben, können Björn, Benny, Frida und Agnetha es sich leisten, noch so verlockende Angebote für eine Comebacktour auszuschlagen. Stattdessen wollen sie demnächst als Avatare mit alten und neuen Songs um die Welt reisen. Bevor die Abba-Hologramme die Bühnen erobern, zelebriert die erfolgreiche Tribute-Show Abbamania noch einmal leibhaftig die größten Hits der schwedischen Pop-Ikonen, 2019 sogar mit zwei neuen Sängerinnen. Olaf Neumann traf im Vorfeld den Bandbiografen Carl Magnus Palm in Stockholm. Er gilt weltweit als führender Abba-Historiker.

Herr Palm, Sie sind weltweit der einzige Abba-Experte, der von seiner Arbeit leben kann. Ist das ein Vollzeit-Job?

Die meiste Zeit ja. Zwischendurch arbeite ich auch an anderen Projekten, aber eigentlich beschäftige ich mich nur mit Abba. Ich schreibe Bücher über die Band, unterstütze ihre Plattenfirma bei CD-Wiederveröffentlichungen, mache etwas fürs Abba-Museum hier in Stockholm und halte Vorträge.

Steigt das Interesse an der Band, die sich bereits 1982 aufgelöst hat?
Definitiv. Das liegt hauptsächlich daran, dass sie einfach gut waren und sich immer neue Generationen für sie interessieren. Zudem leben wir in politisch unruhigen Zeiten und Abba stehen für pure Freude. Danach sehnen sich viele Menschen. Das Phänomen Abba ist wie ein rollender Schneeball, der immer größer wird und sich nicht mehr aufhalten lässt. Das Ganze hat ein Eigenleben entwickelt und existiert außerhalb der vier ehemaligen Bandmitglieder Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson und Anni-Frid Lyngstad.

Die Band existierte gerade mal zehn Jahre. Wird es nicht irgendwann langweilig, sich mit ihr zu beschäftigen?

Das ist wirklich selten der Fall, weil es immer etwas Neues zu entdecken bzw. zu lernen gibt. Und was Abba betrifft, gibt es noch vieles, was wir nicht wissen. 2017 etwa habe ich ein Buch über ihre sämtlichen Aufnahmesessions herausgebracht. Es war die überarbeitete Fassung eines älteren Titels. Während ich daran arbeitete, bekam ich Zugang zu Musik, die ich vorher nie gehört hatte. Wir haben jetzt viel mehr Fakten darüber, wie Abba ihre Songs kreiert haben.

Warum hat Abba sich zu einem zeitlosen Phänomen entwickelt?

Ihre Musik wurde in den 1970er aufgenommen. In den Songs hört man zum Beispiel deutlich die Bass-Drum und die Snare-Drum. Ich glaube, solche Details lassen sie heute noch modern erscheinen. Vielleicht sogar noch moderner als die Beatles. Aber die Beschäftigung mit Abba ist auch eine Zeitreise. In den 1970ern war das Leben de facto nicht leichter als heute. Es gab Terrorismus, den Kalten Krieg, die Ölkrise. Aber aus heutiger Sicht erscheint einem diese Zeit als leichter. Die Gegenwart ist ja sehr komplex. Wir leben in dunklen Zeiten, und Abba symbolisiert Hoffnung.

Lieben alle Schweden Abba?
Die meisten schon. Es wäre schrecklich, wenn wir alle denselben Geschmack hätten. Die Schweden sind stolz auf den weltweiten Erfolg von Abba. Damals hatte unser Land nur acht Millionen Einwohner, aber wir konnten trotzdem eine Band hervorbringen, die mit ihrer Musik die Welt eroberte! Es hat jeden einzelnen Schweden erstaunt, dass dergleichen jemals geschehen konnte.

Gäbe es heute eine so starke schwedische Musikindustrie ohne Abba?
Schwer zu sagen. In den 1970ern hatten Teile der Medien ein eher kritisches Verhältnis zu Abba, was etwas mit dem damaligen kulturellen Klima zu tun hatte. Man warf Abba vor, kommerziell zu sein. Sie wären nur wegen des Geldes dabei. In den 1970ern war die Stimmung hier nicht so, dass es alle möglichst so machen sollten wie Abba. Aber Abba zeigte allen, dass man es schaffen konnte, von Schweden aus Musik für die ganze Welt zu machen.

Waren Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson und Anni-Frid Lyngstad ausgebrannt, als sie sich 1982 nach zehn gemeinsamen Jahren trennten?

Also, sie haben definitiv nicht zu viel getourt. Es gab nur zwei große Tourneen. Aber es waren zehn sehr intensive Jahre. Die Songschreiber Björn und Benny hatten nach zehn Jahren das Gefühl, in dem Format alles gesagt zu haben. Sie suchten nach neuen Inspirationen. Aber Agnetha und Frida fühlten sich nach zehn Jahren mit Abba und den Scheidungen von Björn und Benny müde und ausgebrannt. Agnetha kam mit dem Ruhm nicht zurecht. Aber sie waren nicht Led Zeppelin oder Kiss, sondern eher schlicht. Sie sind auf die Bühne gegangen und haben gesungen.

Demnächst wollen die Abba-Musiker als Avatare mit alten und neuen Songs um die Welt reisen. Was kann man davon erwarten?

Ich gehe davon aus, dass dieses Projekt Qualität haben wird, sonst würden sie es nicht machen. Björn und Benny sind sehr zupackend. Sie würden nichts tun, was nicht dem von ihnen geschaffenen Standard entspricht.

Wie finden Sie generell die Idee, Hologramme auf Tour zu schicken?

Wenn Björn und Benny es machen wollen, dann macht es Sinn. Ich kann aber verstehen, wenn man ihr Vorhaben seltsam findet. Sie leben ja noch, warum gehen sie dann nicht selbst auf die Bühne? Ich glaube, wenn sie die Avatar-Tour irgendwann starten, müssen sie genau erklären, warum sie es so und nicht anders machen. Sie sehen halt nicht mehr aus wie 1979, deshalb entwickeln sie diese digitalen Hologramme von sich selbst. Sie möchten nicht als über 70-Jährige auf der Bühne stehen und das Image von Abba zerstören.

Haben Abba wie jede andere Popband der damaligen Zeit gearbeitet?
Die Band bestand aus zwei Ehepaaren, aber das gab es auch bei Fleetwood Mac. Der herkömmliche Weg einer Band ist, dass vier Freunde zusammen in einem Keller proben. Dann spielen sie in irgendwelchen Bars für kleines Geld, bis sie eines Tages von einer Plattenfirma entdeckt werden. Abba hingegen begann als Studioprojekt. Sie waren plötzlich da und haben sich nicht hochgespielt wie die Beatles. Die populärsten Bandmitglieder waren Agnetha und Frida, die gar keine Songs schrieben.

Haben Björn Ulvaeus und Benny Andersson die Hits aus dem Ärmel geschüttelt?

Björn und Benny brauchten immer eine Ewigkeit, um einen Song zu schreiben, mit dem sie zufrieden waren. Sie sind wirklich schonungslos mit sich selbst umgegangen. Mit „fast gut“ waren sie nicht zufrieden, es musste immer 100-prozentig sein.

Man hat das Gefühl, dass die ganze Zeit etwas passiert. Besser kann man es in der Popmusik nicht machen. Und Agnetha hat nie aufrichtiger gesungen als in diesem Song.
